Significato della canzone
«Applause» è la dichiarazione d'amore di Lady Gaga per il proprio pubblico, ma anche una confessione sulla dipendenza dalla fama. L'immagine dell'IV che sostituisce l'aria stessa rende esplicito il parallelo tra il bisogno di applausi e una vera e propria dipendenza: senza il calore della folla, l'artista dichiara di non riuscire a respirare.
Il testo gioca con il confine tra arte alta e cultura pop, citando il mondo dell'arte contemporanea e ribaltando la gerarchia tra i due mondi: ciò che un tempo era elitario diventa spettacolo di massa, e viceversa. È una riflessione sul ruolo della performance e sull'identità costruita attraverso lo sguardo altrui.
