Strawberry Fields Forever nasce come un invito a un viaggio interiore: Lennon prende per mano l'ascoltatore e lo conduce in un luogo dell'infanzia trasformato in territorio della mente, dove i confini tra ricordo e sogno si dissolvono. Il ritornello "nothing is real" non è un vuoto nichilismo, ma una dichiarazione di libertà dalle regole della logica quotidiana.
Le strofe procedono per dubbi e correzioni continue - "that is, you know, I disagree" - restituendo la sensazione di un pensiero che si contraddice mentre si forma, specchio di un'identità incerta, sospesa tra l'essere capiti e il non appartenere a nessun albero, a nessun gruppo.
